Fable Records Feature on KUT
September 4, 2008
For those of you that made it out to the Steam Heat show a few weeks back… Thanks for coming! The guys at Fable Records reunited more than 30 funk and jazz players from the 70s, including members of Steam Heat, Starcrost, and 47 X’s Its Own Weight, and held a reunion concert at Threadgills.
The importance? These guys are among the many pioneers that laid the foundation to what has made Austin the “live music capital of the world.” It you read the bios of some of your favorite Austin bands, you would find that it was the sound of funk and jazz that has influenced nearly ever song in their catalog.
For those that weren’t there, tune in to KUT 90.5 on Friday, September 5th from 12-1pm during the Austin Music Unlimited program to check out a piece about Steam Heat and Austin Funk. At some point it will be available for download at texasmusicmatters.kut.org. Click here for more info.
I must also give a shout of thanks to Thomas Fawcett for covering the event. If your an Austin music nut, you have probably already subscribed to his blog. But if not, I recommend it as an addition to your feed readers. Check it out here.
Keyboard Magazine Highlights Afrofrequew
June 5, 2008
Afrofreque finds its way to the glossies in a shout from writer Michael Gallant in the June 2008 issue of Keyboard Magazine. To find your name nestled in the pages held together under a cover of Herbie Hancock is indeed a humbling experience. Congrats, Afrofreque!
From the article:
Hot performances from Afrofreque and Duffy were highlights as well. On the ground in Austin, my ears led me to countless nooks and crannies of bars and restaurants, where I paused for a few seconds or a few hours, listening to music that ranged from formulaic and poorly performed to transcendent and inspiring.

Video: Bassnectar @ Antone’s
May 10, 2008
Fireworks, a raging crowd, VIP seating, and wicked visuals made the Bassnectar show at Antone’s on March 29th, 2008 an extremely savage adventure in sound. DJ Manny, Big Face, and MC Tigre Liu warmed up the crowd and Bassnectar finished it off with a 2 1/2-hour set that had the hall bouncing with womtageous infection.
