After raging La Zona Rosa last weekend with Austin being the first city on the tour map with fresh CDs and wax stocked in the merch booth, The Glitch Mob unveils their first long-format LP to the world.

Drink the Sea makes its debut today after a crescendo of activity including months in the studio and a 30 + day tour ramp up. I think the biggest criticism leading up to the release has been a shift in the traditional Glitch Mob-ness of the past as the boys throw live percussion and guitar work into the mix, but eh…. don’t be a hater. Without change there is no growth.

As a fan of their past work, as well as their new evolution in sound, I’m happy to see any artist slather a heaping dose of musicianship on top of an already strong electronic music foundation.

Grinders will crush on Fistful of Silence and Drive It Like You Stole It while others will make it the soundtrack to their commutes, headphone daydreams, and after-dark sound affairs. For those seeking bangers galore and the next anthem to rage, chill out for a second and prepare to go deep…. but stay tuned for the remixes on the way.

Drink the Sea is available in The Glitch Mob store, or you can hunt it down through the usual retail places. Check out the preview below and make up your own mind. Meanwhile, I’ll be in the jacuzzi drinking the sea and toasting the boys to an album well done. Big ups fellas!

Austin Abelton junkies and music producers perk up! ill.Gates, aka The Phat Conductor is rolling through town for a show with Propa Tingz on May 20th for a show at Ace’s lounge…. but not before laying down a seriously PHAT chunk of knowledge the day before during his iLL.Methodology session. And this is no joke! From building Abelton template files to turning those 300 1/2 done tracks into finished works of art. Trust me, you’ll come out of the other side a new producer.

Check it:

THE ILL.METHODOLOGY – Building the Complete and Successful Independent Musician

Wednesday, May 19th 6pm-10pm @ Aces Lounge (Downtown Austin, TX)

Facebook Event: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=114538631894848&ref=ts

“I went from finishing a tune every six months, to finishing one or more a day, and i can teach you to do the same” – Ill Gates

Ill Gates is the new moniker of Canadian breaks producer The Phat Conductor.

He’s been producing music with the likes of Bassnectar, Si-Begg and a ton of others and has put together a brilliant lecture/workshop which can increase your skills and productivity massively in all sorts of areas by making you more efficient and teaching you how to not only write tunes, but to complete them and make them high quality.

Like many of the emerging US/Canadian glitch-hop scene, Gates favours Ableton live for performance and production, and he will show you how to set up racks (combinations of instruments and effects presets), “Sampler 128’s” (pre-loaded banks of samples which massively speed up sound selection for your tunes while at the same time giving you much greater control in sound design), use of Ableton for live performance/DJ sets, and techniques to get your creative parts of the brain to the forefront, so that you get to finish songs quickly without sacrificing quality, while keeping your music fresh.

WORKSHOP LAYOUT:

1. Learning to Live Every Day as a Musician
2. Concepts of Songwriting
3. Workflow
4. Sound Design
5. Library and Organization
6. Tips, Tricks, Techniques
7. Promotion
8. DJing with Ableton Live
9. Q+A period

On top of all this, he’ll give you a pile of his DJ Templates, racks, custom effects, remix parts and course notes.

This 4 hour workshop has been getting incredibly positive reviews and feedback from producers in North America wherever it’s touched down

This is a rare chance to learn techniques and tips from a world class producer who’s not only putting out wicked records, but has been smashing audiences around the world with killer sets played to big crowds at such festivals as Canada’s legendary Shambhala, and the US Burning Man festival more recently.

Feedback so far from attendees has been 100% positive, with a couple so far even paying extra AFTER the workshop finished – I kid you not.

.Don’t take my word for it though… If you want to hear about a past workshop, and how much it affected those who attended (one of whom flew across the continent) you can read up here: http://glitchhopforum.com/glitchhop-production/ill-gates-presents-the-ill-methodolgy-workshop-t1648.html

+ Neuronaut Grig (addictech) – “brilliant!”

+ Agent Orange – “If you’re in the area, you need to go to this. Best $50 I’ve ever spent. (ill.Gates) is a really great teacher, and the materials alone are worth more than the price of admission.”

+ Dov / Muti Music – “this workshop comes highly recommended, loads of producers now spanking out tunes have attended and found it very useful ”

+ Plus 2 – “this workshop is seriously worth every cent. Aside from even the templates, there’s a bunch of fx racks that blow my mind (Exciter FTW).”

+ Binary Ally – “I gotta say that $50 for this event is a CRAZY deal! The ill.Gates Guide to Electronic Music Production is solid gold and his Ableton Racks, Templates, Sampler multis are some next level shit! Don’t sleep on this one!”

+ The Android Bishop – “(ill.Gates) is really spot on with his stuff, I’ve talked to him about his techniques and he is really zoning in on it like a science.”

+ Lisa Sunde – “This was a terrific class and great for many levels of understanding of Abelton. Thanks (ill.Gates)!”

+ Johnathan Moore – “This workshop is fantastic and very well organized. I did this in Ottawa a few months ago!”

+ Chris Sia – “(ill.Gates) is a mad genius. so inspiring to work with!”

==============================================================

$50 Admission Includes:

-Printout of the ILL.GATES Guide to Producing (with recommended reading + viewing)

-Subscription to the ILL.GATES Ableton Rack Collection

-Access to the world famous DJ Templates (a $50 value here alone)

Celebrating the reopening of the new Backyard, the Green Steam Circus is forming to deliver a Jules Vern meets Mad Max-style interactive festival featuring a plethora of freak show performers, circus acts, bands, and headlining DJs.

From the circus:

Imagine a world of steam power and clever invention; of jugglers and clowns and trapeze; of bands and DJs and dancing. There will be a circus-style midway laced with performers that will lead to the main stage where the musicians and DJs will entice your body to dance till you drop…or laugh till your face hurts! So don your top hats or bowlers, dust off your goggles and set your pocket watches because on May 15th we travel to a realm of mind-blowing, nostalgic fantasy that you’ll never forget.

The line up includes performers like the Elemental Uprising Fire Troupe, 999 Eyes Museum of Mutantsrosities, Mr. Cirque, Schave & Reilly, Carousel Cabaret, and Brass Ovaries Pole Dancers, as well as music performances by White Ghost Shivers, Lions, Minor Mishap Marching Band.

Headling DJ’s KLEVER, Bassbin Twins vs Uberzone, DJ Manny, An-ten-nae, and Snakecharmer will be keeping the party going after sundown.

Grab a taste of the circus before the show and download the free music sampler for free tracks by Green Steam Circus bands and DJ’s.

The Mob will be unveiling new material from their upcoming (and first) full-length album release Drink the Sea, already tasted-tested and approved by the masses at Coachella.

The group is no stranger to the lone star capital, performing solo as Ooah, Boreta, and edIT at some of the largest freakshow parties at Enchanted Forest. More recently, they have sold out ragers at The Parish and Ace’s Lounge. A full La Zona experience is long overdue.

But new to the Austin line-up is special guest Chris Alfaro, aka Feed the Robots. The genre-defying artist pulls together heavy doses of traditional jazz, psych, electronic and hip-hop, with progressive melodies and devastating drums into a rich pot of sound. His techniques create harmony between genres with the blending of obscure samples with analog and digital compositions. Free the Robots Has shared the stage with the likes of Prefuse 73, Flying Lotus, the Glitch Mob, Afrika Bambaataa and more.

Warming up the stage for Free the Robots we have Deru, also known as L.A.-based artist Benjamin Wynn. His compositions find hip-hop and electronic music linking hands, while dipping more than a toe in the ambient and classical pools. Click here to stalk him on twitter or visit the Deru music store to preview tracks from his latest release, Say Goodbye to Useless.

La Zona Rosa is located at 612 W. 4th St. in download Austin. Doors open at 8:00pm. This is an ALL AGES event.

About The Glitch Mob

Selling out major venues from coast to coast simply by word of mouth, The Glitch Mob has become a festival favorite, rocking crowds from Lollapalooza to Red Rocks to upcoming key slots at Coachella and Ultra with their visceral, innovative performances. “Pairing the richness and headiness of the best dance music with the head-nodding backbeats of hip-hop, they only aim to move you, and they by and large succeed,” raved the Los Angeles Times. And this spring, the L.A.-based trio embarks on their first full nationwide tour in support of The Glitch Mob’s debut album release Drink the Sea, due May 25 on the band’s own Glass Air label. Drink The Sea represents The Glitch Mob’s transformation up from the underground into a more widescreen vision: from the cryptic cover art (courtesy Sonny Kay, famed for his work with Mars Volta) to the kaleidoscopic dimension of the music inside, Drink The Sea evokes a voyage into the unexpected—including sonic waters previously unexplored by the band itself.

London-based TIPPER will be bringing in the wobble factor along with Bil Bless (as SOTEG), Kingston, and local stringster Govinda. The show is Tips first on Austin soil since the release of his album Tip Hop, a 22-track excursion into glitchy breaks, thick bass juggles, and broken beat sound clashes on top of an assortment of vox licks and lazer effects. Tip Hop is a crusher. If you missed it when it dropped, there is no time like the present to correct the error. And while we are correcting things, Tipper has a nice little contact form on the site... perfect for nagging him to get his ass on Soundcloud and Twitter so we can keep up with his 2010 journey.

And I refuse to not call this a double billing, as Bil Bless (aka SOTEG) is a genius in the production corner as well, weaving beats in and out of soundscapes ripe for emulation. Check out his last release, bless2009, at the Additech store. You can also grab his most recent remix of Bassnectar’s Timestretch below, or grab the single from the little shoppe at Bassnectar Labs.

Duo is warming up the masses for the gutter soul onslaught with a free download of their Launch Blank single.

From the guys:

On 02.02.10 live electronics duo CHIP CHOP pop off the blast doors with LAUNCH BLANK – five tracks of broken-neon, gutter soul from Portland-based producer Graintable and Lake Tahoe-based producer & drummer AD/AM. This highly anticipated release captures the heat Chip Chop delivers in their live performance: labyrinthine melodies and warping pads over gritty sub threats, all rotating around hooks so subtly white hot you’ll be spitting charcoal when you whistle the filthy synth days later.

Angeleska, Mack, and Chelsey throw one hell of a party. But…. {insert tear}, it looks like this event will be the last.

From Angeliska:

The Last Gadjo Disko! It’s true, darlings… Come dance with us one last time – we will miss you! Thanks for all the love you’ve shown us! xoxoox OPA!

Where will I now go to get my fix of glitched out balken slavic hip-hop folk punk dubstep-esque beatness, dance floor marching bands, guys in tutus, girls in glowing hoops, and some of most amazing people in Austin congregated into place? Kind of freaking out here.

Going out in style, the group have upgraded venues to hold the last Gadjo Disko Eastern Bloc Party at La Zona Rosa on February 6th, 2010. Triple the capacity. We will do this!

Tickets are on $7 bucks for those 18 and up…. $15 if you want to play tourist and not bring yourself in true Gadjo Disko costume style. You can get the rest of the info at www.GadjoDisko.com. I need to be alone for while.

Comintern, Wino Vino, Franziska, Sick, and DJ Chicken Kiev will be holding the stage down with the ambiance of 100% recycled culture: immigrant punk, baile funk, kuduro slavic hip-hop, disko ethnoteka.

Angeliska… Mack… Chelsey… I want my Gadjo Disko.

It’s been only 2 days and the track has already swishhhed past Lady Gaga, Radiohead, and Massive Attack to sit pretty in the #1 spot on both Hype Machine’s Popular and Twitter Charts.

But before snatching the download, also pay tribute to the original makers and visit The Pixie’s site an cop some of their new (and FREE) drops as well —> http://www.pixiesmusic.com

From Lorin:

An anthem for living life at a dizzying pace, but refusing to slow down, obviously influenced by the legendary rock band THE PIXIES, this bootleg was 1 of the secret weapons of almost every show on the Cozza Frenzy tour, and now its yours for free:

Happy New Year! Merry Xmas! Happy Hanukkah! Joyous Atheism! Enraptured Humanism! Do as thou will, and blast this track!

Annnddd, for the DJs in the house, Bassnectar has also dropped a copy of the instrumental version in the little music shop at http://remixes.bassnectar.net.

“This is just a simple chunk of bass and beats, probably not dubstep because it is 20 bpm faster, probably not D&B because it doesn’t follow the rules, but its thick and deep and it should be yours. If you are a DJ and want a nice instrumental banger for your sets, this jam has some heavy bass and a nice clean beat loop at the beginning running at 85 bpm…perfect to thicken up any hip hop, drum & bass, dub, downtempo or dubstep track, also a nice little acapella synth at the end… — L”

Have a listen:
